Some climbing plants growing on trees or buildings can become very problematic and are best kept in check.

For example, an ivy planted on the trunk of a tree can look quite aesthetic while it is young but letting it get out of hand and it can quickly become overgrown and damage the tree by suffocating it. 

Climbers growing on buildings can soon block light around windows and cause damage to external brickwork.
